Portugal Capital Markets Day 2024 Euronext and AEM, the Portuguese Issuers Association, have launched the first edition of Portugal Capital Markets Day. This event highlights the opportunities in the Portuguese economy, with a special focus on capital markets. The initiative is supported by AON, VdA - Vieira de Almeida, and JP Morgan.

The event began on 27 June with a roadshow, promoting 20 Portuguese companies to 50 institutional investors and over 30 investment entities. It culminates on 28 June with the conference “Invest in Portugal – Insights into an Economy in Transformation”.

Conference: Invest in Portugal – Insights into an Economy in Transformation: Engage with a distinguished line-up of speakers and network with business leaders, investors, experts, regulators, and government officials. Learn firsthand about the transformative trends and opportunities shaping Portugal's economic future.

Throughout the morning, thought leaders, policymakers, and industry experts will discuss key trends and challenges in the Portuguese business environment. Participants include the Minister of Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, the Minister of Economy, Pedro Reis, the President of the CMVM, Luís Laginha de Sousa, the CEO of Euronext N.V., Stéphane Boujnah, and the President of AEM Miguel Athayde Marques, along with representatives from sectors such as Health, Energy, Infrastructure, Real Estate, and Tourism.

Regulatory body

The Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) is the regulatory authority for Euronext Lisbon. CMVM is in charge of supervising and regulating capital markets, and those active within these markets.

Banco de Portugal is responsible for the supervision of the banking system.

Within its supervision role:

  • CMVM follows the activity of the entities under its supervision

  • monitors compliance with laws and regulations

  • files registries with a legality control purpose

  • develops inspections

  • imposes sanctions within its range of powers and

  • issues ordinances and specific recommendations.

Rulebook

A single Euronext Rule Book governs trading on all Euronext Securities and Derivatives Markets. It contains both harmonised and non-harmonised, or local, rules.

The harmonised rules are as follows :

  • Rule Book I contains the Harmonised Rules, including rules of conduct and of enforcement, designed to protect the markets, as well as rules on listing, trading and membership;

  • Notices regarding the organisation of Trading

  • Notices regarding the organisation of Members

  • Notices regarding the organisation of Issuers

The non-harmonised rules are as follows:

  • Rule Book II and Notices applicable to Euronext Lisbon, the regulated market operated by Euronext Lisbon

Euronext Lisbon is one of the oldest exchanges in Europe

The predecessor of the Lisbon Stock Exchange was created in 1769 asAssembleia dos Homens de Negócio(Assembly of Businessmen). In 1891, Oporto Stock Exchange was founded.

Euronext Lisbon was formed in 2002 when the shares of Lisbon and Oporto Stock Exchange (BVLP) were acquired by Euronext N.V. and the exchange was merged into the pan-European exchange.
