Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus has mutated into different circulating forms known as variants. Some variants die out quickly, while others have proved to be more contagious, such as delta and omicron, which was first discovered in November of 2021.

While no vaccine is 100 percent effective, the best way to protect yourself against variants, such as delta and omicron — and COVID-19 in general — is to get vaccinated then follow up with the recommended booster. Vaccination can help decrease the chances of infection, prevent serious illness if you do get infected and reduce the possibility of even more dangerous variants developing in the future.

What Else Can I Do To Protect Myself From COVID-19 And Its Variants?

Wearing a mask around others and practicing social distancing are still the best ways to protect yourself and others from potential exposure. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “If you are fully vaccinated, to maximize protection and prevent possibly spreading COVID-19 to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.”

In December 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization to two new antiviral pills to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 in people at high risk of developing severe illness. These pills are called Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) and molnupiravir. For more information about these pills — and where to find them — click here.

What Should I Do After Getting Vaccinated?

Stay Up To Date On Your Booster Shot

Everyone 12 and older who has received a COVID-19 vaccination is eligible to receive booster shots — depending on the type of vaccine received. Children 12-17 who received two does of the Pfizer vaccine can get the Pfizer booster. But, if they initially received a Moderna or Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccination, they must be over 18 to get a booster.

A “booster” differs from an “additional dose,” which is given to those with weakened immune systems about 28 days after their second Pfizer or Moderna shot.

A booster shot is typically given five to six months after you’ve received your second shot to provide you with additional protection. The timeline for the booster shot depends on which vaccine was given, whether Pfizer, Moderna or J&J.

If you received a Pfizer vaccine, the wait for a booster is a minimum of five months from the second dose. If you received a Moderna vaccine, the wait is a minimum of six months after the second dose. Unlike Pfizer and Moderna, if you received the J&J single-dose vaccine, you can get a booster after a minimum wait of two months.

Maintain Your COVID-19 Vaccine Card

The CDC also states that "If you are fully vaccinated, you can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic." For those who have already received one of the COVID-19 vaccines, your health care provider likely provided you with a paper vaccine card verifying that you received the inoculation. This paper vaccine card (or another proof of vaccination) serves as your vaccine passport and may come in handy if you decide to travel.

For those who prefer to have a digital version of their vaccine passport, GoodRx provides a Vaccine Wallet for GoodRx Care users. With their simple Vaccine Wallet feature, all you have to do is upload a photo of your COVID-19 vaccination record card, enter a few vaccine details, and you're all set! To access your vaccine information wherever you are, just log in to your GoodRx Care account.
