One of the surest signs of summer is rolling back the cover and getting your swimming pool in shape for the season. A pool can transform your backyard into an enticing oasis, but idyllic images of hanging poolside can get clouded fast by the reality of a dirty pool floor coupled with a surface clogged with debris. Aesthetics aside, without proper maintenance and cleaning, pools can become breeding grounds for bacteria and even algae blooms.

Fortunately, pool vacuums are designed to help you do the dirty work of skimming, sifting, and scrubbing your in-ground or above-ground pool with minimal fuss. In addition to clearing out the gunk, some pool vacuums even provide extra filtration that circulates chemicals and helps to increase the efficiency of chlorine and other additives.

Before you dive in, it pays to understand what kind of vacuum is best for your pool and what is available in your price range. I spoke with Kris Durrett II, President of Durrett Poolscapes, and a member of the Education Committee for the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, to gather more insight in choosing these recommendations below.

From simple telescoping skimmers and handheld vacuums to cordless robots that patrol your pool floor and walls, here is the guidance you need to sidestep any gimmicks and purchase a powerful and effective pool vacuum for any scenario.

The Experts

Kaz Weida: While our Salt Lake City suburban backyard lacks a pool, a saltwater one is definitely on our family's dream-home bucket list. As it turns out, I'm house hunting this summer and carefully researching how to care for pools and the expenses involved. I've got an eye towards budget-friendly solutions that would enable us to finally have our own pool without breaking the bank. I learned the best solutions for pool cleaners often align closely with the filtration system and that there are plenty of affordable pool vacuums no matter the backyard or budget.
Kris Durrett II, President of Durrett Poolscapes has worked in the aquatics industry for 14+ years and is an expert in backyard design, swimming pool maintenance, and equipment installation. He currently serves on the Education Committee for the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, and is committed to elevating the industry and creating the best experience possible for his clients, community, and staff.

What to Consider in a Pool Vacuum

The pool vacuum that will work best for you can be determined by considering a variety of factors, including the type of filtration system your pool currently uses.

“There are three types of automatic pool cleaners,” explains Kris Durrett, president of Durrett Poolscapes and part of the Education Committee for the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance. “The most common type is a pressure-side cleaner, which utilizes flow from the return side of your primary pump and most often has a dedicated 'booster pump' to run the unit.”

Below are other factors that might determine which type of pool vacuum or cleaner is the best fit for your backyard oasis.

Pool Type

Your first step in choosing a pool vacuum is to simply eliminate the ones that won’t work for your pool type. In-ground pool vacuums are more powerful, often automatic, and designed to clean at depth, while above-ground pool vacuums are typically handheld models, operate more gently, and are designed to be used at shallower depths.

Pool Materials

Look for a pool vacuum designed for use on your specific pool’s materials, whether that is tile, vinyl, concrete, or fiberglass. Some types of suction or brushes may be too abrasive for certain materials and could damage your pool’s walls or floor.

Manual or Automatic

Handheld or wand pool vacuums, as each name suggests, use telescoping handles and require some manual guidance to skim the surface and scrub the floor of your pool. Automatic or robotic pool cleaners use motors to crawl the floors, walls, and steps of your pool. They can also provide extra filtration, and some can even be programmed to run independently at a scheduled time.

Suction-side vs Pressure-side

Economical pool vacuums like suction-side models or pressure-side models use your pool’s existing filtration system to power the cleaning. Suction pool vacuums connect to your pool’s skimmer or suction line and suck up debris from the pool floor. Pressure-side models, which attach to a booster pump and have a bag on the top that collects debris, can be expensive unless you already have a pump cleaner installed.

“If your pool is plumbed with a dedicated pressure-side line for the cleaner, the advantages make it well worth the investment in a booster pump and pressure-side cleaner,” says Durrett.

Debris Type

What type of debris do you find most often in your pool? This information helps to determine which vacuum is best suited to the job. If you have large, leafy trees overhanging the pool, you might need a different type of vacuum than with a pool that’s located beachside and often clogged with sand. For instance, some handheld pool vacuums are perfect for picking up leaves and large debris, but sand and small particles will pass right through.

How We Selected Pool Vacuums

To make these recommendations, I consulted with a pool cleaning professional and a certified member of the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) to determine which vacuums were best for each pool and debris type.

Further, I considered manufacturers’ reputations within the pool and spa industry, ease of use with each device, and preferred features and functions. Additionally, I sorted through customer reviews and feedback, and finally, I also relied on the previous research conducted by writer Camryn Rabideau, as many of her selections are still relevant to the roundup now.

All of these efforts have resulted in the products below that were chosen to represent a wide variety of pool vacuums covering every price point from affordable handheld vacuums to advanced robotic models.

Expert and Pool Professional Kris Durrett Shares Tips On Pool Vacuums and Cleaners

Keep Your Pool Clean This Summer With the Best Pool Vacuums (58)

What type of pool cleaner do I need?

There are three types of automatic pool cleaners. The first is your traditional suction cleaner, which is the best option if your pool was built with a dedicated vacuum line in the pool wall. The second and most common type is a pressure-side cleaner. The latter tends to be the most popular choice as you are able to set the booster pump to come on for as many or few hours each day to run the cleaner based on your individual needs.

The third category involves robotic pool cleaners. These tend to be the most expensive option and offer the "latest and greatest" features, such as elevating to the pool surface for easy removal at the touch of a button, remote control via handheld remote or a phone app, and some even notify you when the cleaner canister is full and in need of emptying.

The major downside to robotic cleaners is that the control unit is plugged into an electrical outlet, therefore requiring a power cord running to the cleaner which tends to be unsightly and inconvenient.

Is robotic the way to go?

There are robotic cleaners that have entered the market recently which do not require a power cord, and therefore, are considered wireless. However, these models are faced with unique challenges that manufacturers appear to be in competition to overcome such as battery life, convenient charging, and automatic waste disposal.

How should I store my pool vacuum?

When not in use, it is best to store the vacuum out of the elements and away from potential hazards such as pets, rodents, or children. Most people opt for a safe and convenient place in the garage or pool equipment room.

How long will one of these last?

Most units carry a warranty ranging from one to three years with the typical lifespan being five or more years depending on the amount of wear and how well the cleaner is maintained. The combination of direct sun light and exposure to pool chemicals tends to increase the rate at which cleaners wear down, so the best thing to do is remove the unit before adding chemicals such as shock or muriatic acid to the pool.
