When God declines even our most genuine prayers, we must trust that, “My ways [are] higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa. 55:8–9). His wise plan may require him to decline our pleas. Unanswered prayer can be confusing for us, but not for him.

Today's Gospel: Mark 7:1-13

In today's Gospel, the pharisees point out that the disciples are eating with unclean hands, for this was considered sinful and not observing of the elders. Jesus' response to them, however, is even more shocking.

May we always find the paths where you can go with us and give us what we cannot give ourselves. May our whole life glorify you and our every breath belong to you. Through communion with you may we remain in your safekeeping in body, soul, and spirit.

The primary way to know when God calls you to do something is through His Word. The primary way God commands us is through His Word. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

How does God call out to us? ›

The call of God comes to us through the means of human voices. As we hear the good news about Jesus from preachers or friends, in church services, casual conversations, or in written form, our heart hears the voice of God, calling us through the Spirit into a relationship.

First and foremost, the call that God has for you is to call you into a relationship with Him. Jesus said, “Come unto Me,” not, “Come to a cause,” not, “Come to work” – “Come unto Me, all you that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” The first call is to a “Who.” It's about relationship.

Simply put, sometimes God doesn't answer our prayers because we are praying for the wrong things. And we may not be doing this out of malice, either, so much as out of ignorance. Perhaps we don't know enough of God's Word to know his will.

Spend time in prayer and meditation, asking him for wisdom and understanding. Remember that God's ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and he may have a different plan or timing for your life. Trust God and remember that he knows what's best for you, even when you can't see it.

Be patient and faithful

Sometimes God doesn't seem to answer prayers right away—or at all. Does that mean He doesn't care or that He's not listening? Not at all. Sometimes God waits to answer our prayers because He trusts us to make the right decision.

In other words faith is nurtured and nourished as it ponders who God is and rejoices in who he is. This is what it means to live by faith. The faithful Christian is the trusting Christian. The faithful Christian is the Christian who obeys God even when her circ*mstances are all against her.
