Is EP 90 the same/ similar as 80w 90?
Just servicing as putting gear away and manual says EP90 for topper gearboxes but I've got 80w90.

I've spent ages 'googling'.
Tff'ing took 4 minutes. Much appreciation for anyone that has 'looked in'.

Used to get through no end of it with a leaky chain case on an howard rotavator

Nearly. I think EP90 has additives in it that will slowly eat brass, bronze etc. 80/90 doesn't. Maybe moly sulphide?

No it's not the same Someone did explain the critical differences but I can't remember exactly .
But 80/90 will suffice for those gearboxes.

AFAIK the EP means Extreme Pressure & it contains sulphur additives to increase lubricity. Trouble is that sulphur also attacks copper alloys (e.g. bronze bearings) especially in the presence of water, so some gearboxes warn against EP oils

Even worse, I only checked a gearbox when the smell stopped...... which was a bit too late

99.9% sure they dont use them type additives any more, haven't done so for quite some time now i think? but years ago you would be correct.

Your getting trouble cos your not getting to smell it when your changing good oil.. before it gets full of metal bits.

Ah I see, oil technology has seen enormous advances over the years, I just wish they could make some to smell like Castrol R
I well remember people stuffing sawdust into Transit diffs to try to decrease the whine (impossible in an early one!). I also remember advice to stuff a Bri-nylon shirt into a gearbox too, though that may have been Arthur Daley in the first Minder series!

I know of a machine dealer once told me to put sawdust in a gearbox to take out the play

The EP 90 is just a mono oil "the same thickness in winter as summer" the slightly more import thing is to check the manual to see if it's GL4 or GL5

@midlandslubricants - OK now tell us the difference between GL4 and GL5, as it must be important?
