CSG supports town growth..

A major initiative, Bermuda Breeze, was launched to boost tourism and support local businesses in the Town of St. George. The programme, operated by the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, will run six days a week for 179 days, featuring a market on King’s Square with vendors from across the island and live entertainment on Water Street. A new app will help visitors navigate St. George, which will be enhanced with new decorations.

Danielle Riviere, chief executive of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, emphasised the goal of creating a vibrant experience for visitors and providing opportunities for entrepreneurs. The market, starting at 9:30 a.m., aims to engage tourists arriving by ferry before local businesses typically open. Initially, 17 vendors are participating, with expectations for growth.

Transport Minister Wayne Furbert highlighted the collaborative effort to revitalise St. George, while Tourism Minister Owen Darrell noted the project's potential to showcase Bermuda’s hospitality and boost local revenue. St. George Mayor Quinnell Francis expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, anticipating that it will enhance the town’s offerings and attract more visitors. Bermuda Breeze will not operate on Saturdays.

Corporation of St George's, Bermuda - Official Site (10)

Over 120 sailors enjoy St. George hospitality.

On 22 May, 32 yachts departed from St George’s on a 1,800 nautical mile voyage across the Atlantic to the Azores and on to Europe. This is the twenty fourth year that the ARC Europe sailing rally has visited St George’s, bringing over 650 yachts to the harbour. The yachts sail to Bermuda from St. Maarten or from the US east coast before heading across the Atlantic for a cruise around the Azores and then on to Lagos in southern Portugal.

This year, sailing on the yachts are 122 people aged from 14 to 72 from 14 different countries. During their time in Bermuda the sailors have enjoyed the hospitality of the St. George’s Dinghy & Sports Club and the St. George’s Marina, Goslings rum tasting, happy hour at Wahoo’s, Gombey’s presentation and a fish fry at the Wharf Restaurant. Many took the opportunity to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands. Matt North, owner of the yacht Epiphany said: “Thank you for a lovely time in Bermuda - everything was super well prepared and such a relaxing experience for us skippers. We had a wonderful time. Sad to leave but excited for the journey ahead.”

Planning for the 25th edition of ARC Europe is now under way, and the organisers at World Cruising Club are looking forward to bringing more yachts to beautiful Bermuda next year.

Portuguese Festival Of The Holy Spirit

Corporation of St George's, Bermuda - Official Site (12)

Celebrating Portuguese Culture in the Town.
Wednesday, May 8th | 10:30AM | King’s Square

The Holy Ghost Festa, or “Festa do Divino Espírito Santo,” has its origins in medieval Aragon with Queen St. Isabel of Portugal, who celebrated by helping the poor. A legend tells of her transforming bread hidden in her cloak into roses when challenged by the king. The festival features a native person crowned and paraded to a church for Mass, followed by a communal meal of "sopas" (bread and meat in broth), continuing the tradition of feeding the poor.

The Crown, Scepter, and Plate used in the festival symbolize the Holy Spirit, the people, and the queen’s royalty. Since 1995, a version of this festival has been celebrated by the Portuguese community. A family hosts the Holy Spirit for a week, and at the end of the festival, new families are chosen to host in the coming year. The festival, lasting six weeks, includes rosary prayers, singing, and communal gatherings, culminating in a Mass and a communal meal in St. George’s Square. The event includes a tradition of drawing names to determine the next year's hosts, beginning again on Easter Sunday..

The CSG Team.

The people that really make the town work.

6:30am, you might still be sleeping in a warm bed when it is 61 degrees outside, but CSG is not, they are getting ready to wake the town from its quiet slumber and start the quiet hum that makes town living so great, opening the gardens, opening the restroom, sweeping the streets and collecting the garbage. As residents, we enjoy the services, but sometimes we don’t know who helps make town life more enjoyable.

At the Corporation of St. George’s – by the way, it is the Town of St. George with no apostrophe; the company that manages the municipal service is St. George’s with the ‘s’ – we have 18 staff members across a broad range of disciplines. As the plucky team, our interest in history and passion for the trades are hallmarks that make us the right fit for this team. After all, we generally have to be the jacks-of-all-trades to meet the general needs of a whole town. Whether working in 59-degree rainy winter weather, or informing town residents and businesses of the goings-on in St. George’s, we take pride in our work. If we are answering your calls and emails past office hours or setting up and breaking down events ‘til 1am on a Sunday morning, our days can be long but the job must be done, and done well.

So, who is the team that works behind the scenes to keep a 400-year-old town in good working order? Let’s introduce you to our team.
